Art Day
Yesterday was wander-around-the-Marais-galleries day. We only made it to a handful of places, and about a quarter of it was memorable:
I’m always interested to see what the Takeshi Murakami Corporation has on offer, and there’s a collection of his bits and pieces at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin. “Self Portraits” of the artist as a fat, short-sighted manga obsessive. It will someday cover the world in its detritus, but I’m a big fan of the high-art/otaku connection. In the meantime, if you’re around Rue de Turenne, it’s a very pretty site, and there’s some amusing stuff to be seen, including two short anime films, a Kanye West video and some dolls with mildly disturbing ads, as well as some actual self-portraits and one large painting of his iconic big-eared creature that was genuinely stunning. Also worth looking at is a small but enjoyable show of drawings by Jochen Gerner at the Galerie Anne Barrault and sculpture by Luise Unger at Galerie Karsten Greve.
It’s a fine, low-cost way to spend a free afternoon. And most of the galleries have a map/listing (Galeries Mode d”Emploi, also online) on a counter somewhere that makes it relatively easy to get from a to b. Too bad I can’t remember which gallery this shot is from:
